How to teach Spanish to non Spanish speakers?

This professional course is designed for new and potential native teachers of Spanish as a foreign language. Facilitating the course are highly qualified, university-level Íbero instructors who hold advanced degrees in teaching Spanish to speakers of other languages and have many years of experience teaching both in Argentina and overseas.

The course uses a communicative approach to train new teachers whose skills meet the specific needs of today's Spanish teaching job market.

Objectives

  • To give new and potential teachers all the tools necessary for dealing with the demands of teaching Spanish to foreigners.

  • To offer a thorough education to new and potential Spanish teachers.

  • To give teachers the possibility of appropriating the newest techniques for teaching.

  • Visit Spanish classes at Íbero Spanish School to observe Spanish teachers in action.

  • Participate in a roundtable discussion with other teachers on effective learning strategies and curriculum design.

  • To give Spanish teachers the ability to evaluate and assess their performance at work.

  • To motivate new and potential Spanish teachers to continue their education and systematic preparation for teaching Spanish to foreigners.

Entry requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 18-years-old by the start of the course.

  • They must have a standard of education that would allow them entrance into higher education in Argentina or in other countries.

  • A degree is preferred but not essential.

  • They must have an awareness of language and a competence in Spanish, both written and spoken, that enables them to take the course.

  • They must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers.

Assessment and certificates

Assessment of all components of the course is done on an ongoing basis. The course is internally assessed by highly qualified Íbero instructors. Íbero Spanish School is accredited by national and international organizations.

Professional Development for non Spanish speaking teachers

This program is for educators who do not speak Spanish as their native language. It consists of group and/or private classes to provide educators with the Spanish they need to work with increasingly bilingual student populations. Classroom vocabulary, review of verb tenses in Spanish, methodology, didactics and common commands are features of this program, though instructors always focus the learning on the specific needs of their students.

This program is 4 weeks long (60 practical-theoretical hours), and is in accordance with the level of Spanish of the person(s) interested. Participants should be able to demonstrate a Pre-Advanced level on an exam administered prior to registration.

The course will focus equally on theory and on grammar practice, and on gradually training participants with the ability to transmit their new skills in front of a classroom.

The main objectives of the course are to give the participants the theoretical bases and the practical tools necessary to organize and to realize the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, while at the same time improving their own knowledge and use of the language.

CONTENTS

  • The formation of the instructor.
  • Discussion about the experiences of the participants and their personal objectives upon the commencement of the seminar workshop.
  • Origins and characteristics of Spanish.
  • How to approach the instruction of second languages.
  • Phonetics, morphology and grammar.
  • Rioplatense (Buenos Aires region) pronunciation.
  • Types of words: nouns, adjectives, determinants, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions.
  • Grammar use according to levels.
  • Here we will focus on grammar issues and the best way to organize themes for a hypothetical (group of) student(s) beginning to learn Spanish from zero.
  • Reflections, discussion, and debates about the development of the themes.
  • Problematic aspects and practical solutions.
  • Activities and useful methods for learning and for the listening and speaking practice of students.
  • The course participants will have the opportunity to select some grammar topics that, in due time and with practice, they will be able to express and teach to their students.
