Free Volunteer Program through Íbero: working with children

Íbero Spanish School is committed to helping underprivileged children in Argentina while giving Spanish students life-changing experiences through this option of its Volunteer Program. Íbero works directly with an NGO. Unlike volunteering through other organizations, this option of Íbero's Volunteer Program is a free experience, except for the one-time purchase of a t-shirt and periodic transportation costs payable to the partner NGO.

Schedule

Since the daily volunteer activities begin at 3.00 pm weekdays, the program fits perfectly with the Íbero schedule. Morning students who participate have a two-hour break after classes to eat lunch and walk to the volunteer meeting site. Students can participate as much or as little as they wish and activities are also available on Saturdays.

Location

The on-site volunteering takes place on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

Volunteers travel together and work in groups, collaborating with an established organization.

All of the volunteer activities take place in community centers, soup kitchens or orphanages that are secure and well-looked after by leaders of the communities. Volunteers are always very warmly received, as their efforts are much appreciated by the children and their guardians.

There are also occasional social events hosted by the organization, such as fundraisers or parties, with the idea of building new community centers to help more people.

The volunteers become a close-knit family very quickly, as they are joined by a cause and share meaningful experiences during their volunteer work.

Interview

This volunteer option requires a brief entrance interview, paperwork and at least an Intermediate I, or Beginner II week II or III understanding of Spanish; however, most of the volunteers in this program speak English and hail from outside Argentina.

Volunteer activities

Volunteer activities with children include computer and English classes, birthday parties, Juegoteca (safe playtime with good role models), school support, fund-raising, awareness efforts and miscellaneous events throughout the year. Volunteers assist in setting up and conducting these activities, working directly with the children who attend.

A decision

Making the decision to participate in Íbero’s volunteer option is one that will completely reshape your experience here in Buenos Aires. It will empower you to feel as if you are giving something back to this country, which lends itself so graciously to its visitors
